The Five Favs Series with: Julia of A Piece of Love Quilting

Episode 16

The Story behind Five Favs

This series developed out of my love of movies, and specifically, movie lists. Critics and film geeks alike spend hours pouring over lists, ranking everything from best movies of the year (pretty standard fare) to top five music documentaries (getting a little more granular) to top five movie characters that shaped who you are (pretty personal and specific!). I thought it would be fun to play with this idea in the quilting world. Since we spend so much time in our sewing spaces, they contain interesting snapshots of who we are as creators, and can offer a sneak peek into other aspects of our lives, too. And so- the creation of The Five Favs Blog. This is a top five of the guests favorite items in their sewing space.

This month, I am happy to welcome Julia from A Piece of Love Quilting! I first came across Julia’s work through QuiltInk. (BTW, this isn’t the first time that I have mentioned QuiltInk as the place that I’ve found amazing designers. You can digitally color quilt patterns from designers you already love, but also find amazing new patterns- I can highly recommend you checking it out!) Julia’s designs draw you in with their playful geometric shapes and bold colors. Her love of triangles is a love I also happen to share, so of course I’m a big fan of what she creates. She has some exciting things coming up this year and I can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve!

Welcome Julia!

About Julia

“I've been quilting for around 10 years now after my gorgeous Auntie showed me the basics and have now branched out into pattern writing and running a small online business selling fabric and quilt kits. I love bold, geometric quilts with the triangle being my favourite block.”

Where Julia Works

“We were lucky enough to move last November and buy a house with my parents. My husband and I have a lovely space above the garage where we can both work. The light is gorgeous and it's great to have work separated from home.”

Fav 1 - Sewing Table

“This is my 3rd hand sewing table! @lisasew was advertising it on IG and I happened to be close by to her so picked it up! It fits my Janome perfectly. Lisa actually had it 2nd hand from @paulasteel.quilts who I believe made it herself! I love reusing and recycling so this table is right up my street.”

Fav 2 - Class Photo

“This photo is of my GCSE Design & Technology class. We were lucky enough to have such fabulous teachers - one of which still lives in my village - to inspire and motivate us. I loved art and design at school but never pursued it as a career until now. The photo also has my best friend who passed away 2 years ago in it. She was supportive of everything I did and I love having her watch over me. My BPGP Quilt pattern is dedicated to her and 50% of the profits go to Hope Against Cancer - a Leicestershire charity that provides life saving and extending clinical trials. All of my paid quilt patterns give a percent to different charities.”

Fav 3 - Shop Selection

“This is my little shop! I sell fabric online and have a small storage area in the corner of my sewing space. I love all the colours and collections and it really is a happy little corner. I currently stock AGF but am hoping to branch out to Lewis & Irene very soon!”

Fav 4 - Gingher Scissors

“'Don't cut paper with the fabric scissors!' Are you even a maker if someone in your family hasn't shouted that at you?! Or you've shouted it at someone else! These Gingher scissors are a family heirloom. They are so beautifully made and the weight is just perfect. And the noise they make when they cut...!!!”

Fav 5 - Pin Cushion

“This little pin cushion was made and gifted to me by my incredibly talented Auntie. She lives on a small island off the coast of BC, Canada and makes all her quilts in a portacabin in her garden. She is insanely talented and I'm lucky to call her my Aunt.”
