The Five Favs Series with: Meghan Morris of A Piece of Quiet Quilts
Episode 5
The Story behind Five Favs
This series developed out of my love of movies, and specifically, movie lists. Critics and film geeks alike spend hours pouring over lists, ranking everything from best movies of the year (pretty standard fare) to top five music documentaries (getting a little more granular) to top five movie characters that shaped who you are (pretty personal and specific!). I thought it would be fun to play with this idea in the quilting world. Since we spend so much time in our sewing spaces, they contain interesting snapshots of who we are as creators, and can offer a sneak peek into other aspects of our lives, too. And so- the creation of The Five Favs Blog. This is a top five of the guests favorite items in their sewing space.
I am so excited to have Meghan from A Piece of Quiet Quilts on the Five Favs this month! I met Meghan when we were both enrolled in the Quilter’s Candy Quilt Pattern Writing Course. We were put into a small group together, meeting weekly to deep dive into the content covered during the week. Can you believe that it’s been over two years since the course ended and our group still meets weekly?! I have LOVED seeing her business grow, and celebrating wins with her the whole way. Meghan’s designs are a wonderful mix of modern and traditional, and her bold color choices are always so spot on- I can automatically tell when I see one of her quilts that it’s hers!
About Meghan
“Hi! I'm Meghan, the quilt pattern designer and longarm quilter behind A Piece of Quiet Quilts. My quilting style blends traditional techniques with modern aesthetics, bringing timeless sophistication to contemporary living spaces. My designs are thoughtfully created to be sophisticated yet accessible, ensuring quilting remains fun and fulfilling. Quilting allows me to share my creativity and passion while balancing life as a mom and business owner. When I'm not quilting or designing, you can usually find me enjoying coffee, gaming with my family, or sneaking in a quiet moment with a good book. Curious about my latest projects? Where Meghan Works
“My sewing space started upstairs in a guest room, like most quilters, but when I decided to grow my longarming business, I relocated to our main living area downstairs. It’s part of an open-concept space encompassing the kitchen, dining, and living room, cleverly sectioned off by a "wall" of Ikea shelves filled with fabric and supplies on my side, and cookbooks and board games on the other. This setup has a practical side—providing plenty of storage—but it's also about being present for my family. I'm always available when the kids get home for snacks, homework, and chats about their day. The trade-off, of course, is having no door, so the line between work and family life often blurs. Some days I dream of a separate studio with a door, but for now, I'm grateful for a workspace that lets me balance creativity and family seamlessly.”
Fav 1 - Custom IKEA Hack Cutting Table
“At the literal center of my workspace is my custom IKEA hack cutting table. It’s the perfect ergonomic height, provides ample storage underneath, and has room for a large cutting mat. One end holds my wool pressing mats, making the space multifunctional and highly efficient. This table has truly transformed my sewing routine, becoming the heart of my productivity. Having every tool within arm's reach simplifies my workflow significantly. Honestly, I love it so much that it probably deserves a dedicated blog post. It’s that essential to my creative life!”
Fav 2 - Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids
“This cabinet full of Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids makes me so happy. These are my colors, and if you’ve seen any of my quilts, you’ve probably spotted a few of them in every project. They’re soft, rich, and easy to work with—which makes them a no-brainer when I’m pulling fabric. I’ve got them sorted by color (just… don’t look at the chaotic scrappy side of the cabinet), and it’s honestly the prettiest corner of my studio. Having them all in one place keeps things simple when I’m planning a new quilt, but more than that, they just make me want to dive in and start cutting. It’s the kind of setup that feels equal parts useful and inspiring—which is pretty much my favorite combo.”
Fav 3 - Ember Mug
“As an avid coffee drinker who easily gets absorbed in work, my Ember Mug is a lifesaver. It keeps my coffee perfectly hot for hours, which is essential because reheating forgotten coffee is never the same. Unlike metal travel mugs, the Ember Mug feels like a real ceramic mug, complete with a comfortable handle. I can sip and savor without rushing, and it genuinely improves my mood and productivity during long quilting and design sessions. It’s a small luxury, but it makes a big difference in my daily routine.”
Fav 4 - My iMac
“Okay, hear me out—my iMac might not look like a quilty fave, but it’s absolutely essential to how I work. I spend tons of time on it writing patterns, editing diagrams, connecting with other quilters, and running the admin side of my business. The big screen is a lifesaver (especially since my eyes aren’t what they used to be), and I love how everything just flows in the Apple ecosystem. It keeps my creative brain happy and my business brain organized. And if you’re peeking at the photo—yep, that’s a sneak preview of an upcoming pattern on the screen. Enjoy the spoiler!”
Fav 5 - Family Art
“My sewing space is decorated with personalized family artwork—little reminders of why I pursue this passion. One of my favorite pieces is a painting my husband made in the early days of my business. It’s a small thing, but it means a lot—it reminds me how supported I’ve been from the start. I love that my kids get to see me building something meaningful with my own hands, right in the middle of our home. These personal touches make the studio feel inviting and warm, and they’re a constant reminder of the love that makes this work possible. They add heart to my workspace and help keep me connected to my ‘why.’”
